Daily Rant

Just heard today that they are making a reality show about Mommy Bloggers, and appartently they are going to be ‘casting’ while at BlogHer in couple of weeks. Now you just know I’ve got some issues with this. Let me spell them out for you:

1) Again, it’s that stereotype that if you are a female and a blogger then the only way to get noticed is to be a Mommy Blogger. What a crock of shite. Too many female bloggers are getting pushed to the side because they choose not write about their progeny’s latest/ cutest/ bestest first step/ first haircut/ first step/ breastfeeding. I don’t have anything against MommyBloggers, but for THE LOVE OF PETE, can we reconginze that there are lots of great female bloggers out there, doing all kinds of blogging- instead of focusing on this ONE clique. Ugh. Double ugh.

2) Ever been around Mommy Bloggers? They are like sharks in the water when they smell blood. You think the Real Housewives series women are vicious? You haven’t seen ANYTHING. Is this REALLY the face we want for bloggers? I know tons of  bloggers: mommy, daddy, techie, sex, etc. They are all wonderful and drama-free. Think those will be the type chosen for this series? THINK AGAIN.

3) Will they be chosen for their writing ability or their selling ability? Hey, just asking.

Stand by for LOTS of snark, complaints, and insights into this little slice of heaven.

Here's MY issue — why is BlogHer the end-all-be-all of all things blogging? You have to buy a ticket to New York to get opportunities like this? I know plenty of really amazing bloggers (both of the mommy and non-mommy variety) who aren't going to BlogHer (myself included). What about us? Fucking LAME.

Kind of done with BlogHer right now, honestly. All this conference talk and the awards and all of it, it's just sucking all the fun out of blogging for me.

WOW I am so whiny right now. Let's call this PMS.

You know, I never thought of it that way but I think you are exactly right. I hope that show doesn't end up with a bunch of self-righteous, prissy, mommybloggers who think their kids crap don't stink.

I thought this was so hilarious when I saw it because a show about me would be so fucking boring. And I would have to stop yelling at my kids. Where's the fun in that?

    What Bejewell said!

Welp…I have the best of all worlds. I blog about sex, fashion, being a mom of 7, social media and so much more. I see why non-”mommy bloggers” feel slighted but having worked with many companies in marketing, I understand why they target the mom niche. Moms have the power of the dollar. They make most purchasing decisions and the actual purchases themselves, if you look at statistics and consumer reports. When I blog about my kids, I talk about the messes, the stresses and imperfections of motherhood. People do find that interesting, hence shows like Kate Plus 8. So while I see value in all types of blogging, I understand why mom bloggers are being courted so heavily by the media.
And BlogHer is not the be all, end all of blogger conferences. There are tons of them out there. It just happens to be the biggest and that is why the first round of casting is being done there. They are also coming to LA and accepting online submissions as well. Just a little FYI. :)
    Have a great day!

PS…not all mom bloggers are blood thirsty sharks. A few have given the thousands a bad name. And I've seen PLENTY of drama within other niches of blogging. Just sayin'.

I totally get you. And I get really upset when people create businesses to take money from bloggers (PAY US AND FIND OUT HOW TO MAKE YOUR BLOG BETTER). Believe me, I am looking forward to BlogHer mainly to see other people who I have only talked with online.

  • amydpp

Oh please, that's EXACTLY who will end up on the show. And the blogging community will tear itself apart choosing sides.

  • amydpp

There is no fun that, that's where. :)

  • amydpp

What I said to Bejewell! :)

  • amydpp

This whole thing will do BlogHer NO favors, they don't see it yet, but they will.

  • amydpp

Thanks for your reply. And I understand what you are saying about the relationship between mom bloggers. I get it, I really do. My question is, at what point do you stop being a writer and start being the web version of the Avon lady?

  • amydpp

What?! WHAT DRAMA. I AM TOTALLY DRAMA FREE. Yep, no drama here. None at all. Move along, nothing to see here. ;)
